Based in East Sussex, Brickett Davda produces handmade ceramics that enhance the experience of eating and drinking. For the past 30 years, Jo Davda has combined her signature serene color palette with organic shapes to create pieces that are both practical and elegant, whether dining solo or surrounded by friends and family.

"I had a strong desire to make something that could be used every day, something handmade that was purely functional." – Jo Davda

Before establishing Brickett Davda, Jo trained as a painter, a background that greatly informs her ceramic work. Despite her fine art education, she yearned to create something functional—pieces that could be integrated into daily life. “I studied Fine Art painting at college, but I had a strong desire to make something that could be used every day, something handmade that was purely functional.”

It was the allure of clay that captured Jo's imagination. “As I started to experiment with various materials, I found clay to be the most captivating. It is such a versatile elemental material; I became hooked!”

Her early explorations paved the way for Brickett Davda’s current tableware collections. “The first shapes I made were hefty!” she recalls. “But I slowly honed them down until they became fine, light pieces that felt good to hold.” Jo then experimented with painting them using layers of colored slip, giving their surfaces unique depth and subtle texture. Over time, she developed her trademark muted color palette. “I’m obsessed with color,” she remarks. “Each color enhances the whole eating experience in different ways. Each changes depending on what color it is placed beside and how it interacts with different foods. So, 30 colors later, there is one for every food, mood, and season!”

Jo’s studio is a space of calm creativity, where a small team collaborates to bring her visions to life. “Making ceramic tableware by hand involves many different processes and a lot of time,” she explains. Each piece takes about 14 days to complete, with careful attention to timing—akin to following a recipe. The collaborative nature of her workshop, where each team member has their own creative practices, fosters a supportive environment that enhances the sensibility of the work.

When asked what makes a great ceramic piece, Jo responds: “A perfect piece is one that you feel drawn to, and how it feels in your hands.” This intrinsic individuality of handmade pottery makes the act of choosing a piece deeply personal. For Jo, quality isn’t about perfection; it’s about connection.

With over 30 years of experience under her belt, Jo reflects on her journey with a sense of gratitude and fulfillment. “I can’t even begin to fathom what I have learned; it has been my life for so long,” she shares. Brickett Davda’s ceramics are more than just tableware; they embody a philosophy of beauty, functionality, and connection. Each piece tells a story of craftsmanship, creativity, and the joy of sharing meals with loved ones. Through her work, Jo invites us to elevate our everyday experiences, reminding us that even the simplest acts can be transformed into something extraordinary. In her hands, ceramics become a celebration of the art of eating and a testament to the enduring power of handmade artistry. By intertwining beauty with utility, Jo ensures that every meal becomes a cherished moment, enhancing not just our tables but our lives.
